So I'm not sure what this blog is supposed to be about but I will tell you about my book.
Now that I am further in the book we have met new characters. Tao Chien is traveling with John Sommers and had previously been an herb specialist. He grew up poor and was sold but was taken in by an old medicine doctor who taught him the practice and gave him his own name. Tao Chien helps sneak Eliza onto the ship headed for California.
Then we meet Joaquin Andieta. He is a poor man who has been raised by his mother after his father left them in squander. Eliza and Joaquin meet for the first time when he is unloading supplies to the Sommer's house and sets his eyes on her. At first glance Eliza is struck by him, and introduces herself after she has gotten him a drink. That is where their loving started. From then on they would meet each other down the road and talk about things, thoughts, and feelings. Finally one night Eliza sneaks him in and they make love in the attic. After that they write letters to each other, which Eliza keeps hidden in the garden.
Eliza I fear is more in love with Joaquin than he is with her, and this could potentially be a problem in the near future. What makes this love match even more scandalous is that Eliza is now carrying Joaquin's baby!
Another scandal that we hear about was Rose's affair with an entertainer. They fell in love and had a secret affair. This was the man that Rose fell in love with was betrayed by. Jeremy Sommers found out that he was already married and broke up their affair. After that Rose never tried to fall in love again believing there was no one as special as the one before.
Now we read about the California Gold Rush, and Joaquin has left. He has left Eliza not know she is pregnant and so she sets out on a journey to find him in California. The last part I have read was that Eliza is now stowed away beneath the decks of a ship with Tao Chien as her only company, and is headed off to California.
